Born in 1842 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, Sam Davis grew up in a family of ten children. He was educated at the Western Military Institute in Nashville and went on to attend the University of Nashville. However, when the Civil War broke out in 1861, he joined the Confederate Army and served under General Braxton Bragg.

Sam Davis quickly rose through the ranks and became a scout for General John Hunt Morgan. He was known for his fearlessness and skill in gathering intelligence about Union troop movements. However, in November 1863, he was captured by Union troops while on a mission to gather information about the enemy's positions.

Despite being tortured and threatened with death, Sam Davis refused to give up any information about his mission or his fellow soldiers.
